Abstract

291,810. Hummelinck, M. G. W. Dec. 8, 1926. Filters having sheet filtering-material; leaf filters.-Impurities are removed from colloidal liquids, emulsions or suspensions by filtration through cloth or wire mesh, the pores of which are large compared with the size of the colloidal, emulsified or suspended particles, the flow being regulated so that its velocity through the filtering layer does not exceed 1.8 metres per hour and that the deposited impurities are not disturbed by the movement of the liquid. Several forms of apparatus, suitable for the application of the process to the filtration of milk, are described. A cylinder 4, Fig. 1, having a perforated or wire mesh bottom covered with filter cloth is supported within a tank 1. The liquid to be filtered is supplied through a cock 7 and the filtrate is withdrawn from a small receptacle 9 within the cylinder 4 by a siphon 8 which delivers into a receptacle 10 in an out-flow trough 11. Other hollow filtering-elements 6<1>, each consisting of a grating surrounded by a slotted tube and covered with cloth, may be provided, the filtrate therefrom passing into the cylinder 4 through pipes 33. Leaf filtering elements 14, Fig. 2, are suspended in the lower of the compartments into which a tank 13 is divided by a plate 18, the liquid under treatment being supplied to the upper compartment and passing quietly to the lower compartment around the edges of the plate. The filtrate passes away by a trough 17. To minimize agitation a similar arrangement shown in Fig. 5 is provided with a funnel 26 and the plate 18 is formed as a pan with a side wall 25. In order that the filter elements shall always be immersed in liquid, the discharge pipes for the filtrate have swan necks 27 or deliver into a trough the outlet from which is above the top of the filter elements or above the plate 18.
