Abstract

291,419. Selden Co., (Assignees of Jaeger, A. 0.). June 3, 1927, [Convention date]. Oxygenated organic compounds. - Catalytic oxidation of organic compounds, particularly by action of an oxidizing gas upon the vapours, is controlled or limited to produce intermediate compounds by use in conjunction with the catalyst of a " stabilizer " which consists of a salt or compound of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or metal which form basic oxides not reducible by hydrogen. Suitable salts are acid or neutral sulphates, phosphates, halides, chlorates, nitrates, cyanides, both simple and complex, arsenates, antimonates, bismuthates, borates. carbonates, &c. The stabilizer may be admixed with the catalyst or formed in its presence, or by reaction with acids or metal compounds other than the catalyst contained in contact masses. The effectiveness of the catalyst and the stabilizer is increased by the addition of substances referred to as " stabilizer " promoters " which consist of compounds of catalytic elements such as heavy metals, and amphoteric metals such as aluminim, zinc, lead, &c. which are not catalysts or are only mild catalysts for the particular reaction. Alkali metallates serve both as stabilizers and promoters. Catalysts together with stabilizers and promoters may be contained together in siliceous or non-siliceous base exchange bodies. Reactions which may be carried out are the oxidation of benzol, toluol, phenols, or furfurol to rnaleic and fumaric acids, of cresols to salicylaldehyde and salicylic acid, of toluol and halogen and nitro-substituted toluols to the corresponding aldehydes and acids, of xylenes, pseudocumenes, mesitylene, paracymene and other derivatives to the corresponding aldehydes and acids, of naphthalene to naphthaquinone, phthalic anhydride and maleic acid, of phthalic anhydride to maleic and fumaric acids, or anthracene to anthraquinone, of phenanthrene to phenanthraquinone and diphenic acid, of acenaphthene to acenaphthylene, acenaphthaquinone, bisacenaphthylidenedione, naphthaldehydic acid, naphthalic aldehyde, and hemimellitic acid, of fluorene to fluorenone, of eugenol and isoeugenol to vanillin and vanillic acid, of methyl alcohol and methane to formaldehyde, of ethyl alcohol to acetic acid, and of ethylene chlorhydrin to chloracetic acid. The catalysts may also be used for the purification of anthracene, coal tar ammonia, &c. Specifications 279,466, 280,712 and 281,307 are referred to.
