Magnetic instruments.-The vibrating armature of a magnetic telephone instrument is surrounded by a coil carrying the telephonic currents, and is secured at its ends to a spring-supported frame which allows the armature freedom of movement in the direction of two parallel but oppositely-directed magnetic fields. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pole-pieces 2, 3 are attached to a permanent magnet 1. Each pole-piece has two poles arranged diagonally so as to create, at the two gaps, oppositely-directed fluxes parallel to the legs of the magnet 1. The armature 6 is supported in the gaps by a rectangular frame 7 enveloping the pole-pieces and itself supported by springs 8 attached at one end to a rigid arm 9. The armature 6 is thus free to move bodily up and down between the poles 2, 3 and to operate a diaphragm &c. by the rod 5. Between the pole-pieces, and surrounding the armature 6, is arranged the coil 4 carrying the telephone current. The springs 8 may be stiff enough to prevent the armature 6 from making contact with the poles 2, 3; or wires or cords may be attached to the frame 7 to limit its vibratory movement.
