290,880. Gangler, P., and Hesser Maschinenfabrik-Akt.-Ges., F. Sept. 14, 1927. Packeting by wrapping- up. - In a machine for wrapping round loaves of bread or similarly shaped articles of the type in which the article is conveyed along a lower feed track to elevating mechanism, the wrapper is fed above the article at right angles to the track, the article and wrapper are fed to an upper folding device and are finally discharged from the machine by an upper conveyer, the wrapper, with or without the article, is engaged by a device which turns it into a diagonal position relative to the folding device. The machine comprises frames 400, Fig. 1, carrying a main driving shaft 41 adapted to rotate a lay shaft 37 on which are mounted eccentrics which operate levers on a shaft 413 to actuate the various parts of the machine. Round loaves B are fed into the machine by a lower conveyer comprising bands 1 passing over pulleys 404 on a shaft 405 driven through free wheel mechanism by a gear 406 and quadrant 407 rocked by a lever 411 on the shaft 413 through a link 410. The conveyer delivers the loaves to position I against a stop 62 and on to a plunger 2 rotatably mounted on a rod 55 vertically reciprocable by a rocking lever 60 on the shaft 413. As the plunger rises, it lifts the leaf upon it through an aperture 16 in a plate 15 supported by pillars 100 on the main frame. Prior to the movement of the plunger a wrapper U has been taken from a pile or cut from a web and placed over the apertures 16. Paper P, Fig. 4, is drawn from a roll R by a roller 18 and driven intermittently by the upward motion of a toothed quadrant 21 rocked by a crank disc 33 on a shaft 34 rotating by the shaft 37. As the quadrant commences its ascent a cam disc 52 on the shaft 34 actuates links 49, 48 to raise an arm 46 constituting an extension of one of two levers 43 between which counter rollers 19 are rotatably mounted. The movement lowers the rollers 19 on to the roller 18 to permit that roller to feed forward the paper P whereupon a wrapper length is severed by fixed and movable cutters 149, 150, the latter being pivoted to a rod 152 mounted in levers 153, one of which has an extension 155 rocked through a link 156 by a cam on the shaft 34. A torsion spring presses the cutter 150 against the cutter 149. If no loaf is being fed to the wrapping position a flap 160, Fig. 1, above the conveyer 1 remains stationary and the nose of a lever 167 connected to it prevents the roller 19 from descending on to the roller 18; consequently the paper is not fed forward. As the loaf and the wrapper thus placed on the plate 15 rise, the wrapper is engaged by a counter holder 64 mounted on a rod 65 which is journaled in bushings 66, 67 secured to a standard 71 and is reciprocable therethrough by links 78 which are connected to an eye 83 disposed between two collars 86', 86" secured to the rod and guided by an arm 83<1>, engaging a column 69, the links 78 being connected to levers 73 adapted to be rocked by a bell-crank lever on the shaft 413. The bearing 66 carries a pin 85 which engages a helical slot in the rod 65 causing the rod, the counter holder 64, the wrapper U, the loaf B and the plunger 2 to turn through 45‹ as the plunger 2 rises, and disposing the wrapper (a), Fig. 2, diagonally to the folding appliances. During its ascent, two sets of annular brushes 88<1>, 88, aided by guide pieces 500, fold the wrapper on to the top of the loaf and, before the plunger 2 descends, the wrapper and loaf are gripped by jaws 501 on spring. pressed arms 503 rotatable about pivots 103, 103' secured to a slide track 117 carried by the standard 71. The loaf is now in position II ready for the side-flaps to be folded bv folders 101, 101<1> on arms 102, 102<1> rotatable about the pivots 103, 103<1> and provided with second arms 107, 107<1> linked to bell crank levers 111, 111<1> on the shaft 413. In their inner position, the folders support the loaf and the plunger 2 descends. As the folders move outwards, the rear ends of the arms 102, 102<1> engage pins adjustably mounted on rearward extensions of the arms 503 of the grippers 501 and withdraw the grippers from the loaf. In the meantime, a folder 115 for the rear flap has been advanced by a lever 432 on the shaft 413, the lever thrusting forward a slide 116 on which the folder is mounted and thereby causing the folder to turn under the rear flap and support the loaf. Any tendency on the part of the loaf to move forwards is checked by a spring pressed flap 450. Finally, a slide 118 thrusts the loaf from position II to position III and a rolled 502a in a discharge track 121 folds the front flap. At position III electric heaters seal the folds and the wrapped loaves are removed by conveyers 130.
