Abstract

290,383. Jepson, W. Feb. 24, 1927. Teaching gunnery.-The turret 10 of an instructional gun 11<a> is mounted on a platform 6, which can be rocked in imitation of the movements of vehicles or ships. The platform is guided between vertical corner posts 9 and is partly supported by universally-jointed pillars 7 at one end of beams 3 pivoted at 2 on the foundation frame 1 and counterbalanced by weights 4 at the other end of the beams. Chains 13 are attached to the front corners of the platform and a chain 16 is attached to the middle of the rear end of the platform, forming a three-point suspension completing the support of the platform and serving to impart the rocking movements thereto. Each chain passes over a pulley 14, then under a jockey pulley 60 and over a pulley 30, and is finally attached to a pillar 19, which is hinged on a pivot 20 and can be angularly adjusted thereon by means of a hand screw device 24 in conjunction with a. shoe 21, to regulate the tension of the chain. The pulley 60 is eccentrically carried by a rotatable disc 61, and can be set to various positions or continuously moved by the rotation of this disc. The pulley 30 is carried by a slotted arm 31 mounted on a crank 32 on a shaft 36; and the slot in this arm is engaged by a sliding block 33 on a crank 35 on a shaft 50. The pulley 30 is thus given a compound movement depending on the relative speed of the shafts 36, 50 and the phase relation of the cranks 32, 35. All these movements are derived from a shaft 40 driven by a motor 42, a clutch 71 being interposed in the driving mechanism of the pulley 60, so that this pulley can be set to different positions when required or can be kept continually in motion. The clutch 71 is controlled from the gun platform by a handle 72. A frame 11 is attached to the muzzle of the gun, and a miniature target 12 is slidably mounted in the frame and attached to a cord 95, which passes over a pulley 96 on the frame and is wound on a roller 94 fast with another roller 92. Another cord 93 is wound on this la.tter roller and is attached to the muzzle of the gun. The rollers 92, 94 are wound up by a spring and are mounted at the front end of a balanced beam 91 rotated about a pillar 90 by the training movements of the gun. With this arrangement, an elevation or depression of the gun barrel causes a corresponding reverse movement of the target 12. A dotter 97 operated by the gunner indicates on the miniture target whether he has succeeded in correctly manipulating the gun to compensate for the movements of the gun platform. Specification 137,443 is referred to.
