Abstract

289,935. Marks, E. C. R., (Guarantee Liquid Measure Co.). Feb. 1,1927. Fixed -chamber apparatus. - In a liquiddispensing apparatus, the supply of liquid to a measuring chamber is governed by a valve, a second pressure-operated valve shutting off the supply to the first valve when the chamber is filled. Figs. 1 and 2 show an apparatus of the alternately-filled and emptied twin-chamber type, the flow of liquid to the measuring-chambers 10 being controlled by a four-way valve 14, and supplied by a pump 20 and pipes 22, 25 through valve chambers 23, 24. When one of the measuring-chambers is filled, the pressure of the liquid supply rises, and causes the expansion of a bellows-chamber 32, thus closing a valve 27. As soon as the valve 27 closes, it is locked by a catch 41 engaging with a collar 42 on the lower end of the valve spindle 29. The increasing pressure of the liquid then opens a spring-loaded valve 36, and the liquid passes to the cylinder 40, raising the piston 39, piston rod 52, bracket 54, and connecting rod 56, which readjusts the four-way valve 14 by means of ratchet-gearing, so that the filled chamber is discharged and the empty chamber is filled. The pressure of the liquid supply then falls, but the valve 27 is not released by the latch 41 until, at the end of a quarter revolution of the cock 14, a stud 62 strikes a tripping-lever 46, which, by means of the link 44 and the lever 43, move the latch 41. The valve 27 is then opened by the spring 28, the valve 36 is closed by the spring 37, and the pressure relief valve 63 on the piston 39 falls into its cage, opening the port 64, and allowing the spring 51 to push down the piston 39. Excess liquid which enters the cylinder 40 when the piston 39 is upraised passes away by the bevelled part 65 of the piston, the port 66, and the pipe 67. The discharge valve is opened by a handle 68, Fig. 4, and has an additional arm 17 for moving, by means of a link 82, a spring- controlled rod 71, arranged so that the opening of the valve to its fullest extent causes rod 71 to close a switch 70 and start the electric motor 21 which drives the supply pump 20. On the rod 71 is a bracket 92, which engaged by a hook 90, Fig. 6, on the nozzle end 89 of the hose 16 as this is hung up by being thrust through an aperture 88 in the casing. It may be secured there by a lock passed through the parts 90, 91 on the nozzle and casing respectively. In this position the discharge valve is closed, the switch 70 is open, and all parts are inoperative. The rod 71 also has an arm 72 with an inclined end adapted to open a bleeder valve 74 adapted to drain the valve 14. A bleeder connection connects the supply pipe 25 and the drain pipe 77. An air connection 94 connects the measuring-chambers 10, the inlets being closed by float valves. To drain off the last gallon after the pump has ceased, a vacuum breaker 97 is fitted. Calibrating plugs are also fitted.
