April 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Catalytic apparatus.-The reacting gases are circulated over two or more distinct groups of surfaces enclosing the catalytic material and the transfer of heat is regulated by varying the proportions of the gases which circulate over the respective surfaces. In the arrangement shown the catalyst-containing chamber C contains a set of inner heatexchanging tubes D communicating with an inner chamber E. Gas supplied through the inlet G passes through branch tubes F, H provided with valves R, S and communicating respectively with the space E and the space surrounding the chamber C. By regulating the valves the proportions of gas taking these two paths and consequently the heat-exchanging effect may be varied. Alternatively the separation of the gas into portions to effect regulation of heatexchanging effects may take place on the outlet side of the apparatus. The apparatus may be applied, e.g. in respect of variable quantities of carbon monoxide occuring in a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen intended for conversion into amnionia, the valves being regulated so as to effect the conversion into methane, correctly in spite of variations of the percentage of carbon monoxide.
