Abstract

289,464. Stokes & Smith Co., (Assignees of Federwitz, T. A.). April 29, 192'7, [Convention datel. Coating machines. - Mechanism for coating sheets with adhesive comprises an applying roller associated with a member adapted to distribute the adhesive supplied to the roller by a supply member. Preferably the distributor member is cylindrical and rotates periodically in timed relation to the sheet-feeding mechanism. A suction roller 21 having a suction vent 27 is pivoted on an arm 20, attached to the carriage 5 by an arm 18 and pivot 19. The carriage 5 is reciprocated along track members 2 by means of the rock-shaft 6, lever 7 and link 9. When the carriage is approximately in the position shown in Fig. 1, the roger 21 contacts with the edge of the top sheet of a pile, supported on a vertically moving table 11, and lifts it on to the rear edge 36 of a guide 35. As the carriage 5, Fig. 1, moves to the right, the surface 37 of the guide 35 guides the sheet to a driven feed roller 38 which, when contacting with the idle roller 33, feeds the sheet to feed rollers 39, and 40, driven and idle respectively. These rollers advance the sheet from the guide member 41 to the applying roller 42 and coacting roller 43, whence the coated sheets are removed by a conveyer 44. The connection between the vacuum pump and roller 21 is operated by the movement of the carriage 5 and at a predetermined point the vacuum is broken, allowing the sheet to fall on to the guide 35. The roll 42 is supplied with adhesive from a. tank 46 in which a roller 47 dips. A scraper 50 is provided and the glue is transferred to a distributing member 51, resting against or near the roller 42. The position of the member 51 is adjustable by means of a hand-screw 56, to vary the thickness of adhesive on the roller 42. The member 51 is intermittently rotated by means of the reciprocation of the carriage 5. A ratchet 57 is attached to the shaft 52 on which is mounted the member 51. and is normally held stationary by a spring pawl 59. The teeth 58 of the ratchet engage with a pawl 59a, pivoted on a lever 60, and are maintained in engagement by a spring 61. The lever 60 is pivoted on a shaft 62 and normally pressed against a stop by a spring 64. A rod 67 connected to the, carriage 5, passes freely through an end of the lever 60 and carries movable abutments 68 which engage the end of the lever when the carriage moves to the right, Fig. 1. The lever 60 is thus moved and actuates the pawl 59a, which in turn rotates the ratchet 57 and distributor member 51. The distributing- member 51 may be in the form of an elongated polyhedron.
