Abstract

289,007. American Radiator Co., (Assignees of Meloche, D. H.). April 19, 1927, [Convention date]. Cupola furnaces.-In the furnace treatment of metals and metalliferous materials, powdered coal or coke is burnt to produce non-oxidizing gases in a combustion chamber external to the charge receiving chamber, and the resulting combustion products are passed upwards through a bed of loose lump material, such as coke or broken brick, which supports the charge. In the cupola furnace shown each of the four inclined combustion chambers 7 opening into the lower part of the shaft 3<a> is fed from a main 20 with a mixture of powdered fuel and air, the supply being delivered through the nozzle 19 and inlet connection 14, while secondary air is admitted from the wind-box 22 and connection 21. The combustion chamber is lined with refractory material, and may have a cooling-jacket 9. By controlling the supplies of fuel and air reducing or neutral gases can be passed to the cupola. The bed 24 of broken material is supported on a sand bottom 23. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) it is stated that air and gas may be used us fuel, and that combustion may be effected to produce oxidizing gases. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
