Abstract

Extracts, making.-An apparatus for the continuous lixiviation of materials in which the lixiviating agent moves in counter-current to the material to be treated, comprises an outer casing within which is arranged a drum or travelling band to form with the casing a continuous and enclosed peripheral channel, in the lower portion of which the lixiviation occurs. Inlets and exits for the lixiviating agent and material to be treated are provided in the casing, the latter being both above the liquid level which lies below the uppermost point of the drum or band. In the apparatus shown, material is fed into a, substantially cylindrical casing 1 at a. hopper 8 and is carried round by a series of rake-like arms 3, arranged on drum mounted coaxially in the casing 1, in counter-current to the lixiviating agent which is maintained at a. constant level by an overflow 12, and is circulated by a pump 13 having a delivery connection 11 to the casing 1. The material is stopped by a grid 4 between the arms of which the arms 3 pass. A chamber 5 with a sieve-like base is attached to the casing 1 at one side and contains a convever 6 which conveys treated material to a, worm press 7 and thence to a conveyer 9. Liquid is drawn off from the chamber 5 by a connection 10 and passed into the main stream of the lixiviating agent. The casing 1 may have different forms from that shown and the grid 4 may be hinged so as to be raised or lowered to permit continuous treatment periodically if desired.
