Abstract

288,926. Elsworth, F. H. Nov. 19, 1927. Oyster culture.-A hatchery for oysters and other marine life comprises a housing 3 protecting a body of tidal water 2, which is enclosed by gates 7 formed of wire screens, with means 11 for circulating water from the outside through the enclosed space and warming or cooling the circulating water. Ventilators 5 are fitted. In order to facilitate removal of other forms of life which are enemies of the oyster spawn, a pump 19 is arranged to lift portions of the water with the spawn and enemies to a rotary foraminous drum 20, through which most of the water and spawn pass back to the main body of water; the remainder of the water, spawn and the enemies pass along a trough to a centrifugal separator 27 from which the water and spawn flow by pipe 29 to the space 2 and the enemies are discharged from the pipe -28 outside said space. The spawning oysters are laid on the lowest of a set of shelves 9 and the spawn is collected on shells &c. on the upper shelves.
