Abstract

288,920. CuÚnoud, J. Nov. 8, 1927. Leaf-filters.-A filter for filtering wine &c. comprises an elongated chamber 1 which contains hollow filtering elements 19 and is mounted on a stand 66 in such a way that it can be turned into three different operative positions. In the upright position shown in Fig. 1, the wine enters under pressure at 11 and passes through perforated tubes 14 into the chamber, where asbestos is added, then through the flat elements 19 consisting of wire gauze surrounding perforated metal, and into a chamber 80 formed between a removable cover 4 and a partition 26, and thence through the exit 20. The elements 19 are united at the bottom.. and at the top are attached to the partition 26 with which without emptying the chamber 1 they can be withdrawn as a unit by a handle 32 when it is desired to clear them. Or they can be replaced by a conical strainer for straining must fed through the tube 11. The elements 19 are strengthened by internal sinuous wires 23 with distance pieces 24. At the two ends of the chamber 1 are air cocks 45, 46, the cock 45 connecting with the interior of the chamber 1, and the cock 46 with the interior of the straining elements. These cocks can be turned into three positions, to cut off all connection with atmosphere, to make direct communication with atmosphere, or to make communication through a floating valve which closes when the liquid reaches a certain height. A number of filters fed from an overhead receptacle or by a pump, may be coupled in parallel. In the position shown in Fig. 10, the wine need not be supplied under pressure, while for filtering small quantities the filter may be inverted. The lower ends of the filterelements may be connected by pipes to the chamber 80.
