Abstract

287,607. Marks, E. C. R., (U.S. Industrial Alcohol Co.). Nov. 29, 1926. Alcoholic liquids, esters, aldehydes, and ketones, distilling.-A process for dehydrating alcohol by distillation in presence of a third liquid, such as benzol, forming a ternary azeotropic mixture which on condensation separates into two layers, is applicable to the separation of other alcohols such as methyl, propyl, or butyl alcohol, esters such as methyl or ethyl acetates or propionates, aldehydes such as acetaldehyde, or ketones such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or diethyl ketone from admixture with water. The third liquid may be an aromatic or paraffin hydrocarbon, or halogenated hydrocarbon such as carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, ethyl chloride or bromide, a stightly soluble ester such as ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, butyl acetate, propyl propionate, or amyl acetate or alcohols such as butyl or amyl alcohol. In dehydrating alcohol, aqueous alcohol in liquid or vapour form is fed by a pipe 4 into a rectifying column 1 heated by a steam chest 2 and supplied with benzol by a pipe 5. Dehydrated alcohol is withdrawn from the base by a pipe 3. Vapours pass from the top of the column by a pipe 6 to a condenser 7. The condensate passes into a separating chamber 10 in which two layers are formed. The upper benzol layer passes into a rectifying column 12 from the base of which pure benzol is returned to the column 1. The lower layer is passed by a pipe 20 into a vessel 21 in which it is scrubbed with water. Benzol separated as an upper layer is passed into the column 12, and the aqueous layer is passed into a rectifying column 22, from the upper part of which, alcohol vapours are passed into the column 1. The liquid from the bottom of the column 22 is used as scrubbing liquid in the vessel 21. The condensed vapours from the berzol-rectifying column 12 are passed by a pipe 27 into the rectifying column 22. Specification 288,728 is referred to.
