Abstract
285,261. Rosenmund, A. L. March 7, 1927. Indicating by trapping and measuring a column of liquid.-A level-indicating device suitable for a liquid-fuel reservoir is combined with a closure device which can be locked against unauthorized opening. A tube 16 within the tank 1 is slotted at its lower end 17 which is surrounded by a protecting casing 18 resting on the bottom of the tank. A piston 27 is carried by a rod 28 passing through a plug 29, closing stopper 49, and the tank closure 67. On the upward movement of the piston, a body of liquid depending on the level in the tank is trapped in the tube 16 and lifted until it causes a float 39 to rise and close an aperture 51 in the plug 29. The extent to which the piston can be raised is an indication of the liquid level. The screw cap 50 carries a lever 54, Fig. 6, pivoted at 53, which, when forced into a horizontal position against the wall of the pipe 3 locks the measuring device in position. The tank-closure 67 is provided with a pin 66 to prevent rotation, and with a spring plate 69 loosely suspended by studs 71, the plate being slightly longer than the diameter of pipe 3. A pin 73 rests on the plate 69, and when lifted by a lever 74 and eccentric 77, bends the plate 69 so that its ends do not engage the sides of the pipe 3 and the plug 67 is free to be withdrawn. The lever 74 may be secured in its lowered position by a padlock or seal 80 to prevent unauthorized removal of the closure 67. The level indicator 99 is detachable from the piston rod 28 bv means of a clutch mechanism shown in Fig. 7. The rod 28 passes into an aperture 88 in the bar 87 and is held by a ball 89. The handle 91 has a projection 92 with a bevelled surface 93, so that on lifting the handle, the ball 89 is pressed into engagement with the piston rod 28 and the rod is lifted with it. The handle may be disengaged by pressing it downwards relatively to the bar 87 to release the ball 89. The indicating device comprises a cased spring tape 99, one end of which is attached to a hook 101. Specifications 252,218 and 285,657 are referred to.
