Transmission lines; protective arrangements.- The maximum power transmissible by an extra high voltage line is increased by a number of static condensers 7 located at spaced intervals along the line and in series with the line and with each other. The line may be constituted by alternate sections of metal sheathed cable 15 and ordinary line construction, the whole being carried on the usual insulators. The condensers are each provided with a parallel spark gap 8 to prevent breakdown under abnormal load conditions and to protect the gaps these may have a short-circuiting switch 13 operated by the current in the gap circuit.
