Abstract
284,240. Savy, E. L, A. Jan. 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Coating baker's and confectioners' goods.- In a machine for coating biscuits, sweetmeats &c., the coating mechanism, which comprises a coating conveyer trained over drums revolving in a tank containing coating material, and small rollers positioned between the drums and rotated frictionally thereby, is supported on a frame which is adjustable upwards or downwards relatively to a discharge conveyer for the coated articles, to facilitate the overturning of coated articles of various sizes on to the discharge conveyer. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, the coating mechanism is mounted in a frame 1 which is vertically adjustable in a pedestal 3 bv a handwheel 6, worm 5 and a rack and pinion mechanism 4. The discharge conveyer 38 runs through the frame 1 and over a vibrating table 38<1> which renders the coating uniform. The tank or basin 7 is of small capacity and is fed from a reservoir 50, which may be provided with a stirrer, and automatic delivery control means, e.g., by a float adapted to act mechanically or electrically. The material flows through a cock 51, Fig. 3, into a hopper 34 connected with the tank 7 which may be drained through an opening 35. The tank 7 is surmounted and its capacity increased by superposed frames 8, 8<1> which carry the whole of the coating mechanism in a readily removable manner to facilitate cleaning as described in Specification 296,704. The .coating mechanism comprises hollow rollers 9 - - 9<11>, journaled in bearings 10 clamped between the frames 8, 8<1> which are assembled in position by screws 11. Sprockets 12, Fig. 3, on the shafts 9<111> are interconnected by a chain 13, suitable jockey sprockets being provided. The chain 13 drives a roller or shaft 22 and also a shaft 19 on which thin grooved discs 20 are carried. The drums 9 - - 9<11> are correspondingly grooved and small diameter coil springs 21 are arranged endlessly in the grooves to carry the biscuits &c. in the manner of the usual threads or wires. The springs pass over the shaft 22 and are tensioned by a member 22'. The pressing roller 26 for sinking the biscuits into the coating material is carried on arms 27 removably pivoted on the shaft 22 and adjustable by screws 29. The roller 26 is chain-driven at the same surface speed as the drums 9 - - 9". Small auxiliary rollers 23 rest between the drums 9 - - 9" and are rotated frictionally thereby, thus producing eddies in the coating substance as it is carried forward by the springs 21 and improving the coating. In operation, the biscuits are fed to the coating springs or conveyer by a conveyer 37 and the thickness of the layer of the coating substance carried by the coating conveyer is regulated by the pivoted member 36. The biscuits are sunk to the required depth by the roller 26 and proceed to a point adjacent the drum 9<11>. Beneath this point, an adjustable inclined member 33 allows the material to fall away from the springs 21 at a very acute angle, thus allowing the biscuits to fall on to the springs gently and ensuring a bottom coating of uniform depth. The coating is then scraped by a vertically adjustable scraper 24 and the surplus material adhering to the springs is detached by an air blast 45. The biscuits are detached from the springs 21 by discs 48 secured adjacent to the sides of the grooved discs 20 and fall on the conveyer 38, inversion taking place simultaneously. The discs 48 are cleaned on one of their sides by the springs 21. Surplus material overflows from the tank 7 over a wall 39 into a shoot 49. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) contains the subject-matter of Specification 296,704. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
