Fish, treating.-Brushes for use in machines for washing or cleaning fish and for other purposes have bristles that form a normal brushing- surface and additional bristles that can be introduced into or withdrawn from the brushing surface to vary the stiffness of the latter. As shown, Figs. 2 and 3, the brush comprises a series of longitudinal lags E provided with bristles E<1> and secured to supports F loose on the shaft G, and adjustable lags H with shorter or stiffer bristles H<1> arranged between the lags E so as to be movable radially by means of extensions H<2> fitting in guides or slots in the end and middle support F. Pins H<3> on the extensions engage in radial slots in the supports and project into curved slots I<1>, Fig. 4, in discs 1 fixed to the shaft G. Nuts II<4> on the outer ends of the pins H<3> at the ends of the brush are provided to clamp the discs I to the end supports F. By slackening the nuts H<4> and turning the supports F with the lags E, H on the shaft G, the pins H<3> are moved to the outer ends of the slots I<1> and the bristles H<1> moved outwards. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6, the radial movement of the lags H is effected by means of toggle levers J. The supports F of the lags E are fixed to the shaft G, and the lags H have extensions H<2> fitting in guides or slots in the supports F at the ends and middle of the brush. The links J are pivoted together at their inner ends, while their outer ends are pivoted at the extensions H<2> and to the brackets F<1> on the supports F. Rods K passing through the supports F connect the links J pertaining to each adjustable lag H and are movable longitudinally as by means of nuts L, M on the shaft G to move the adjustable lags inwards or outwards The link K may be operated independently so that any one or more of the adjustable brushes can be rendered operative as desired. One or more of the brushes may be used in a fish washing or cleaning machine.
