Abstract

283,603. Muck, O. July 14, 1926. Oscillating machines.- A device for converting electric vibrations into mechanical energy, e.g. for operating switches, comprises an alternating- current magnet adapted to vibrate a spring tuned to the frequency of the current and arranged to strike a separate and pivoted actuating member which, in its turn, acts on the member to be driven, so that the spring is damped by the impact but not materially by friction, and the distance between the spring and the separate actuating member is variable. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the tuned spring a strikes a tapper e which is pivoted at g and carries a pawl b by which it turns a wheel c. The damping effect of the tapper upon the spring is controlled by a spring e<1> bearing on the tapper, the distance of the spring e<1> from the spring a being adjusted by a screw d. The leaf spring a may be replaced by a coiled or other spring a<1>, Fig. 4, and the tapper may be pivoted centrally as at g, Fig. 4, in which arrangement it may carry either a switch contact v, as shown, or a pawl for turning a wheel. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the tapper alternately opens and closes the switches x and v, s in alternative circuits. A spring y is arranged to return the tapper slowly so that the switch v, s remains closed while the tuned spring a<1> is vibrating, and the switch x is closed when the vibration stops. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 the tuned spring a is vertical, while the tapper normally rests on a contact x to close one circuit, but when the spring a is vibrated the tapper engages a contact z<1> to close another circuit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7, the circuits I and II are selectively opened and closed by energizing the magnet coil m by currents of different frequencies corresponding to the tuning of two springs u, v, which are adapted to throw a tumbler H to one side or other of its pivot g and so close the corresponding switch t, x.
