Valve gear.-In timing-mechanism for fluidpressure engine valves, the necessary dismantling of parts in ramedying incorrect relative rotary adjustment of spiral, spur, &c. gearing 3, 20 is minimized by the use of a gear shaft 4 supported in two bearings 6, 5 on one or both sides of the wheel 3, one 6 of which bearings is removable and the other 5 is tiltable so that the wheels may be disengaged, rotated relatively, and reengaged. The invention is shown applied to the operation of a sleeve valve, in which the drive passes from the wheel 20 to the crank pin 40. The removable bearing 6 is maintained in position by a cover 7, which may be surrounded by a housing 13 serving to withdraw the bearing with the cover. An eccentric boss 14 on the extension may engage the casing to provide for adjustment of depth of gear-mesh. The tilting bearing may be mounted on trunnions 8, or if an antifriction bearing is used, the outer race 9 can be supported in a trunnioned housing, or the housing may be part-spherical externally. As further alternatives, the outer race and the housing may have spherical engaging surfaces 11, or the inner face 12 of the outer race may be spherical.
