Abstract
282,646. Warner Electric Brake Corporation, (Assignees of Warner, A. P., and Cadman, A. B.). Dec. 22, 1926, [Convention date]. Actuated or applied by running axle or wheel; electric and magnetic; blocks and shoes acting on drums; cone and disc.-A brake for vehicle wheels in which brake shoes or the like are applied to a brake drum by the momentum of the vehicle comprises a pair of annular electromagneti cally attracted friction elements urged towards each other by a spring, one of which rotates with the wheel and the other of which is oonnected to the end of a crank arm on a rock shaft disposed paralles to the axis of the drum, the movement of the shaft effecting the application of the brake. The brake proper comprises a pair of shoes 23 adapted to be applied to a drum 16 secured to the spokes 10 of the wheel and provided with a lining 19. The shoes are adapted to be expanded by either of two cams 28, 28<1> disposed between their ends and carried by shafts 41, 43 mounted in a member 33 fixed to the axle 13. The shafts 41, 43 carry arms 42, 45 respectively, one of which is connected by a rod 46 for direct hand or foot operation and the other to the electromagnetic clutch device. The shoes are positioned laterally in the drum by a pair of adjustable bolts 37 passing through the fixed member 33 and provided with heads engaging slots 38 in the shoes. The electromagnetic clutch for applying the shoes comprises an annular member 47 slidably mounted upon the member 33 and provided with a winder 50 and adapted to engage a flange 21 on the brake drum 16. Bolts 55 hold the clutch member close to the flange 21. Current is supplied to the coil 50 by means of a pair of segmental blocks 72 secured to the member 47 and connected to the ends of the, coil, a pair of spring-urged plugs mounted on the casing 53 and connected with the leads 67 being in contact with the blocks 72. The springs of the contact plugs serve to keep the members 47, 21 in contact, thus maintaining the reluctance of the magnetic flux circuit through these members at a constant low value. The clutch member 47 is provided with a pin 57 working in a slot 58 in the casing 53 and connected by a link 59 to the arm 42 on the cam shaft 41. Thus when current is supplied to the coil 50 the member 47 becomes clutched to and partly rotated by the flange 21 of the brake drum 16 and the cam 28 is thereby turned to apply the shoes 23 to the drum. Covers and protectors for brakes.-The electromagnetic dutch member 47 is encased by an extension 53 of the fixed member 33 which carries the cam shafts 41, 43 of the shoe brakes. An inclined deflecting surface 54 is formed on the flange 21 of the brake drum 16 to assist in preventing water from entering the space between the flange and the casing 53. The slot 58 in the casing 53 through which the pin 57 on the clutch member 47 projects is closed by a plate 61 carried by the pin and guided by a pin 63 passing through a slot 64 in the plate, a spring on the pin 63 serving to hold the plate against the casing.
