Abstract

282,484. Tattersall, A. E., Downes, F., and, Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. Sept.] 17, 1926. Electrical systems, non-automatic.-In systems in which a temporary current is transmitted over the rails of a section between two cabins when it is desired to pass a train over the section, slow releasing relays are directly connected to the track rails and con trol the release of a starting signal lever or other device. The slow release is of such duration as to avoid the need for maintaining energization of the relays, and may be provided in any suitable way, as by adjustment of the air gap separating the armature and the poles of the relay when de-energized. Fig. 2 shows two cabins A, B at ends of a section. The circuits at A are for use where the cabin is close to the end of the insulated section of rails 1, 2; those at B for use where the cabin is some distance away. The relays 5 are slowreleasing and are normally connected across the track rails 1, 2 through the contact 6 of plunger 7 or the contact 26 of relay 24 which is energized by depression of plunger 7 at. B. When plunger 7 is depressed the battery 8 is connected across the track rails. The starting levers are controlled by electromagnets 4 and direction levers by electromagnets 19; the latter are provided to prevent admission of trains to the section from both' ends at once, and control line-relays 21, which in turn control the starting lever lock magnets 4. To pass a train from A to B, A depresses plunger 7 and relay 5 at B is thereby energized, closing contact 11 and energizing repeater relay 23. Contacts 27 of relay 23 close the circuit to the lock-magnet 19 of the direction lever, which may then be reversed. B then closes plunger 7 and, if the starting signal lever is normal and contact 9 is closed, relay 24 is energized and battery 8 at B connected to the rails 1, 2 to energize relay 5 at A. Current is also transmitted from battery 12 at B over contact 16 of the reversed direction lever at B, wire 22, contact 15 of the normal direction lever and relay 21 at A and return wire 28. The starting signal lever lock magnet 4 at A is energized from battery 12 at A over contacts of relays 5, 21. The direction lever at B is released for restoration by depression of plunger 7 at A, thereby energizing relay 5 at B; repeater relay 23 then completes the lock-magnet circuit. A simplified arangement of apparatus without the direction levers is also described.
