Abstract
282,357. Schmiedel, E. Dec. 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Seat attachments; luggage-carriers. - In pillion seats and saddles for motor and other cycles &c., the top or seating surface is tensioned by one or more torsion springs helically wound about a cross member of the underframe or support, the free ends of the springs acting upon or being attached to the top or seating surface. In the construction of pillion seat shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the top d is fixed at its forward end to a cross member b, and is stretched over the frame a by two springs i<1>, which are mounted on a rear cross member c, their free ends being bent upwards at i and connected to the top by means of a bar r or by means of an integral yoke formed from the spring wire. The springs i<1> are adjusted according to the load to be carried by means of a rotary sleeve s, which is fixed in adjusted position by a pin t passed through one of a number of holes o in the sleeve and a hole in the cross member c. The top may also be tensioned by means of screws, bolts, &c. A hand-grip a<1> may be provided. In an extensible seat for use by more than one rider, the underframe is formed by two telescopic parts relatively adjustable by means of screws, &c., and the seat top is passed around the front cross member and is connected to two wire cords, which pass over rollers and are connected to the extensible underframe. In a further modification, the top of the luggage-carrier is made flexible and similarly tensioned, so that it can be used either as a pillion seat or as a luggage support.
