Abstract

282,285. Marks, E. C. R., (Jordan Co.. 0. F.). May 30, 1927. Retractive switches:-The circuit of an electromagnet 46 mounted on a railway vehicle is automatically closed, so as to open a valve 45 contiolling the supply of lubricant on to the joints of the rail 3 through nozzles 47, during the passage of the nozzle over the joints. An arm 8, the length of which is adjustable, is adjustably secured on a shaft 6a journaled in brackets 6 on the frame 1 and carries a stud 14 on which is mounted a roller 29 which engages the inner edge of the rail. A segmental part 15 of the arm 8 carries on its underside an arcuate block 17 of insulating material, the block being arcuately adjustable on the part 15 by means of bolts 21 passing through slots 18, 19. A metallic contact member 23 is secured on the underside of the block 17 bv means of a bolt 25 extending through a slot 20 in the part 15, and is flanked by wear plates 24 of insulating material. Also journaled on the stud 14 is a lever 30, the outer end of which carries a ringer 33 while the inner end carries a spring-pressed contact plug 35. Adjustable stops 38, 43 limit the movement of the lever. One terminal of the magnet 46 is connected to the contact member 23 by a lead 27, while the other terminal is connected to one terminal of a battery, the other terminal of which is earthed. As the vehicle approaches a joint, the finger 33 engages the joint plate 4 and swings the lever 30 about the stud 14, moving the plug 35 from the insulating plate 24 on to the contact plate 23, thus energizing the magnet 46 and opening the valve 45. As the finger 33 leaves the plate 4, a spring 40 returns the lever 30 to its former position, thus breaking the circuit and causing the valve to close.
