Abstract

282,242. Wade, H., (Canada British Syndicate Ltd.). Feb. 23, 1927. Springs, arrangement of.-In a vehicle suspension device comprising a pivotally mounted spring-controlled rigid supporting member arranged between the vehicle body and axle, a gradually increasing frictional resistance is imparted to movement of the member from a given position by means having a substantially constant area of frictional contact between two parts which slide relatively to each other about a common centre, a rebound spring being mounted within the spring supporting the member. As described, a pair of spring-controlled members A arranged transversely of the vehicle is used in conjunction with each axle, the front axle arrangement being shown in Fig. 1. Each member A is pivotally mounted in a bracket E on the vehicle frame, one arm being connected by shackles 46 to the axle while the other arm B is adapted to compress a load spring C abutting against a seat 16 on the bracket E. Pressure is applied to the spring by a rod H which has a nut and washer 17 bearing against the outer end of the spring and passes through a slot 19 in the arm B which is formed with semi-cylindrical recesses to engage rollers 20<a> bearing against a plate 21 secured on the rod and provided with ears 21<a> to hold the rollers in position. A rebound spring D mounted in a tube 25 within the spring C bears at its outer end against an abutment in the tube, which is fixed to the bracket E, and at its inner end against a plate 33 which is pressed by the spring D against a brake shoe 30 in frictional engagement with a curved portion 29 of the lever arm, the frictional resistance varying with the compression of the spring D. The shoe 30 may have recesses to receive plugs of lubricant carrying material. The brackets E of the front and rear pairs of levers are secured in channel section bars F, G which are respectively secured to the front transverse frame member 37, Figs. 1 and 6, and the near ends of the longitudinal frame members 36 respectively. In order to prevent the axle fouling the suspension members, the brackets E are arranged behind or in front of the vertical transverse planes containing the axles, and the arms A, B of the pivoted members are offset as shown in Fig. 6. The brackets E of a pair may be connected together or to the frame by tie rods 11, 12. The pivot of each supporting member A, B comprises a pin 1, of cross section as shown in Fig. 8, having segmental ends 9, Fig. 7, carried in correspondingly shaped apertures 8 in the sides of the bracket E. This pin rests on the knife edge of a segmental member 2 secured on the member A, B.
