Abstract
280,699. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Deriaz, P. Nov. 5, 1926. Centrifugal governors; fluid relays. -The. masses 20 of a centrifugal governor are carried on an arm 29 of a helical spring 25 the end of which is anchored cantilever-like to the rotating casing 1. Two springs 24, 25, Fig. 3 may be inclined and combined to form. a loop 30 on which the mass 20 is adjustably mounted. Further loading is provided by helical springs adjustably enclosed at their middle point and stretching from one mass to the other, and also by additional springs 37 acting through a lever 39 to press on the spring loops 30, such levers being stopped from acting beyond a certain range by adjustable pins 43. The governor may operate a throttle relay through a fluid pressure system comprising a piston 8 normally balanced by constant pressure fluid supplied to each end of the cylinder 6 the piston rod 9 operating a servo motor to control the prime mover. One end of the cylinder 6 leads through a bore 14 in the piston to nozzles 17 which are usually closed by the curved surfaces of the masses 20 but when the masses move out owing to increase of speed, liquid flows out of the nozzles 17 reducing the fluid pressure on one end of the piston and allowing it to be moved to the left to operated the servo motor until the nozzles are again closed by the curved surfaces of the masses 20 in a new position of equilibrium. The nozzles and piston rotate with the cylinder and casing 1.
