Abstract

280,636. Harth, P. E. Aug. 17, 1926. R÷ntgen-ray apparatus.-A material for producing shields opaque to R÷ntgen-rays consisting of barium sulphate and a binder is characterized in that the barium sulphate is finely divided and comprises 75 to 95 per cent of the material, and that the binder is a plastic one, for example pitch, phenol condensation products such as Bakelite, rubber, or polymerized china wood oil. The material may be formed in sheets which may be reinforced by embedding therein one or more sheets of fabric. It may be used for lining the walls of operating theatres &c., or may be moulded into any desired shape by the application of heat and pressure. Fig. 2 shows a Rontgen tube 2 encased in a shield 1 of such material, formed in known manner in two parts bolted together as at 3. and having a window for the passage of the rays. The fabric reinforcement is shown at 5. The Specification also refers to shields made from rubber and finely-divided metals such as bismuth and lead.
