Turning-gear.-In an electric starter for motorcar engines, the switch for the starting motor is closed by manual means and is held open by engine-controlled means when the engine is running. In one form, Fig. 3, a plunger contact 10, adapted to bridge contacts 12 in the motor circuit, is actuated from the clutch pedal, gear lever, or other normal control member of the car through a connection which is disengaged when the engine starts. A member 13 pivoted on the plunger 10 is held by a spring 13a against an arm 14 on a rock shaft 15, another arm 16 on which is connected through springs 35, 36 to a rod 17 pivotally connected to the clutch pedal &c. of the car, When the engine starts, the member 13 is moved out of the range of the arm 14 by the stem 18 of a diaphragm 19 acted upon by engine suction, or by means acted upon by other fluid media normally present in the engine, or by electric current from an engine-driven generator. In order to close the ignition circuit conjointly with the starting switch 10, 12, a bellcrank 21, which bears against a shoulder on the member 13, may be connected by a Bowden wire 23 to an ignition switch. The movement of the ignition switch may be delayed by a dash-pot piston on the switch plunger. In a modification, a bellcrank such as 21, connected to a hand-actuated ignition switch, is arranged to move the member 13 out of the range of the arm 14 when the ignition is switched off, so that the starter cannot be used until the ignition is switched on.
