Soil working implements; disc - tool implements; tools; draught devices; frames and handles; weights, arrangement of.-Implements or appliances for hoeing, cultivating, ploughing, &c. each comprise a fixed or movable tool or tools, or operating part, attached to the lower end of a handle the upper part of which is adapted to rest on the shoulder or back of the user while the part carrying the tool is adapted to be rocked about its axis and is provided with a cross handle to be grasped by the hands. The handle mav consist of a wooden upper part 10 of rectangular or flattened crosssection and a tubular metal part 13, the part 10 being spigotted into the part 13 to allow of partial rotation of the latter by the cross handle 14. The upper part 10 may be forked to rest on both shoulders, and it may be padded. In a modification the long tubular part 13 is replaced by a wooden shaft fitting into tubular metal parts at both ends. The central rectangular part of the cross handle 14 is slotted to fit on the tube 13, being adjustably secured thereon by a clamping plate 17 and bolts 16. A hoeing-tool may be made by bending a strip of metal as shown in Fig. 1. It may be pivotally connected by a bolt 21 to the handle and adjustably secured by a bolt 22 passing through any pair of a series of holes in parallel parts 19 of the strip and bearing against the handle. The working part 23 of the tool may be sharpened or toothed. The shank of a plough, pronged cultivator, hoe, &c. may be fixed in the open end of the tube 13 by a bolt. The prongs of the cultivator may end in triangular blades. A somewhat similar tool to that shown in Fig. 1 is connected by a bolt 21 to the handle and is provided at its upper end with a U-shaped strap fitting round the handle. Fig. 7 - shows another tool fitted with such a strap 30 and provided with spaced teeth 32 and with an upwardly inclined rear part 34. Fig. 10 shows a handle 13 provided with a double tool for operating on both sides of a row of plants simultaneously. The tool comprises a U-shaped strip 35 bent outwards at the ends to form blades 38 and carrying rotary discs 39. It is secured by a bolt 21 and a U-shaped strap 37, the blades and discs being adjusted laterally by means of screws 41 bearing against the handle 13. The operator usually walks backwards facing the tool, but may walk forwards with the tool behind him. In the latter case, extensions of the hand grips 18 extend forward at right angles to the cross-handle 14. Two or more handles may be provided on one implement for the use of two or more operators. Two may be arranged so that one operator walks behind another. Adjustable weights may be provided on the tool or handle. A clamp for securing a. circular cross handle consists of a rod or wire bent into U-shape with the limbs again bent back in planes at right angles to the first bend and parallel to one another, a clamping-plate being fitted over the ends which are screwed to receive clamping-nuts. The upper part of the long handle may be flexibly and resiliently connected to the lower part by a strip spring part above the cross handle, &c. The upper part may be pivoted and extended beyond its pivot, the extension being connected to the lower part of the handle by a spring.
