Actuating-mechanism. - In apparatus for dewatering a pulp of powdered materials, the coarse particles collect at the outlet 12a where they are discharged by means of an automatically operated valve 13, the operation of which is made to depend on the accumulation of solid material in the lower part of the vessel 10. For this purpose, the vessel 10 is surmounted by a chamber 31 in which is mounted a slowly rotating bevel gear 34 carrying cams 32, 33. A floating spindle 36, the lower end of which is guided in a slot in the upper end of the shaft 43 which carries blades 45 in the chamber 12, carries rollers 40 adapted to ride on the cams 32, 33. When there is little resistance to the rotation of the blades 45, the cams 32, 33, rollers 40, spindle 36 and blades 45 rotate slowly as a whole; but when coarse particles have collected in the chamber 12, the consequent resistance causes the rollers 40 to move up the cams 32, 33, thereby raising a lever 30 and opening the weighted valve 13 through an adjustable link 29. In a modified arrangement, Fig 12, the cams 32, 33 are carried by a worm wheel 46, and the rollers 40 are carried by a horizontal shaft 48 fixed to a floating spindle 49 in hole 50 in the shaft 36, vertical guide bars 53 and guide wheels 54 being provided. The central part of the shaft 48 engages through a ball 56 with an abutment 55 on the valve-operating lever 30.
