Abstract
279,525. Leek, A. E., and Wigan Coal & Iron Co., Ltd. April 22, 1926. Separating by gravity; filters having sheet filtering-materials; filters with loose filtering- materials.-In separating solid matter from slurry, such as that obtained in washing coal, the slurry is allowed to stand in bulk until the density of each of a number of layers is substantially uniform and the slurry of each layer is then applied under pressure to a filter-bed of material slightly coarser than the coarsest material in suspension in the laver. A vessel 1 is fitted with filter-supporting trays 22, 23, 24, mounted so that they can be turned from outside the vessel on perforated draw-off pipes 26. A mixture of solid and liquid material is supplied to the vessel through the pipe 2, while the trays are turned vertically. After charging, the trays are turned into a horizontal position and the heavier solid matter in the several layers is deposited on the surface of the trays, after which the liquid is filtered through this deposit either under suction or under pressure due to liquid introduced through the pipe 2 or to air introduced through a pipe 3. The vessel has a tapered lower portion 7, a hinged bottom 5 supporting a tray 21 and a draw-off pipe 16. After all the liquid has been drawn off the cakes may be dried by air, drawn through from the pipe 3, and discharged by tilting the trays. The bottom 5 is turned by pneumatically or hydraulically operated toggle-levers 12 and is provided with an air inlet pipe 18. The vessel is supported on resilient connections 8 in a frame 9. It is provided with connections 46 through which clear liquid may be decanted. Fig. 4 shows a pair of filter trays 37, arranged side-by-side, and each provided with two perforated surfaces 38 either of which may be turned uppermost for use. A modified arrangement for the bottom of the vessel is shown in Fig. 5. There are two independent hinged covers 40 each with a filter tray rocking on trunnions 43, 44.
