Abstract
278,799. Heyman, W. A. July 13, 1926. Solidifying liquids other than water. - Fruit juices are concentrated by freezing out the contained water in apparatus comprising an inclined cylindrical chamber 1 surrounded by a jacket for a cooling-medium such as brine or ammonia, the juices being admitted to the chamber through a pipe 19 at the lower end and the cooling-medium being passed into the jacket at the upper end. The jacket is preferably provided with helical baffles 2 and fins 26, Fig. 2, the baffles being either formed integrally with or attached to the chamber wall. The chamber is fitted with a worm conveyer 16 having perforations 18 and peripheral notches increasing in number from the lower to the upper end, whereby ice is detached from the walls and fed with the liquid towards an outlet 8 at the upper end. The chamber and jacket may be, drained through valved pipes 24, 22, and if desired a gas such as carbon dioxide may be admitted through the lower end to displace air and thereby avoid risk of contamination. The ice may subsequently be separated from the liquid in centrifugal devices. The freezing process may be regulated by adjusting the flow of cooling-medium, the supply of juices and the speed of the worm 16. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 9672/84, 24870/04, and 27823/11.
