Abstract

278,469. West, A. G. D., and British Broadcasting Co., Ltd. July 23, 1926. Magnetic instruments; diaphragms.- A device for converting mechanical vibrations into electrical vibrations and vice versa by electromagnetic induction, more particularly for use as a telephone transmitter, receiver or loudspeaker, comprises a magnetic circuit, a portion of which is constituted by one or more bodies consisting, at least in part, of magnetic material, and supported solely by the magnetic field. In its simplest form, a magnetic air gap is partially bridged by a body in the form of a thin lamina of magnetic material. The body or bodies may be constituted by magnetic material or by non-magnetic material coated with magnetic material. A modified construction is described in which a portion of the magnetic circuit is constituted by finely divided magnetic material substantially unsupported excepting by the magnetic flux. In a further modification, the finely divided material may be supported upon a membrane between a pair of magnet poles so as to be substantially unconstrained in the direction of its vibrational movement. The material may either be attached to the membrane by an adhesive or deposited thereon in colloidal form. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the electromagnet 1 is excited by a coil 2 and is provided with pole-pieces 3, the air gap between which is bridged by finely divided magnetic material 4, which constitutes a substantially aperiodic diaphragm. The material 4 may be supported on or enclosed in a thin material so that it remains in position when the magnetizing current is interrupted. Pick-up coils may be provided on the magnet limbs or the polarizing coil 2 may serve as the pick-up coil. In a modification, the material 4 is situated in the annular air-gap of a pot-shaped magnet. In order to prevent resonance, the air chamber behind the diaphragm, where this exists, may be provided with apertures communicating with the outside air and damping material, such as cotton wool, may be inserted in the chamber.
