Abstract
278,448. Olin, J. M., and Schuricht, A. G. July 9, 1926. Cased forms; projectiles.-Projectiles for small calibre rifles are made by depositing a non- abrasive metal, such as copper, on a lead slug by electro-deposition, spraying, dipping, or like process, and working and forming the plated slug at the driving part so as to condense the plating and conform the driving part diametrically to the rifling. A lead slug which is preferably shaped in a swaging die, Fig. 4, comprising dies 2, 3, 5 and an ejector 4, is plated with a coating, and the plated slug is then swaged by means of dies and formers so as to secure the desired conformation and treatment of the plating. A vent is provided in the die 2 to receive excess metal. The plated slug, prior to swaging, may be of greater or less diameter and length than the finished projectile in order that the swaging operation may cause compression of the plating 9, Fig. 3, particularly at the driving part 8. The slugs may be cut from a plated wire, which has been previously worked; and such slugs are swaged to correct shape, the pressing operation causing the lead core to project to form a nose 23, Fig. 14. A plated wire 20 may be severed into slugs by means of rotating cutters 31, Fig. 16, adapted to turn the plating over the ends of the slugs. One end of a slug may be cut off square, in order to form a projectile having a plated nose, and a lead base. In the case of applying the coating by spraying, the plating may be finely divided metal carried by a suitable vehicle, such as varnish.
