Abstract
278,347. Fischer, A. Sept. 29, 1926, [Convention date]. Radiations, treating diseases with. - Radioactive material is prepared from radium and mesothorium or their salts by incorporating these with metals or alloys by causing intimate contact with the metal or alloy and subjecting the product to mechanical treatment, such as hammering, rolling or wire drawing accompanied by heat treatment if desired, the temperature being raised in some cases to the melting point. Alternatively, the radio-active materials may be deposited on the metal or alloy by electrolysis and, prior to the incorporation treatment, may have electrically or otherwise deposited thereon a covering layer of metal. The metals employed are those which are not readily oxidized such as platinum or gold. In an example, the metal or alloy is first hammered or drawn into thin sheets or wires and coated with the radio-active substance, with or without binding-material. The coated sheets &c. are now hammered, rolled, &c. until the added material is thoroughly incorporated. For dental purposes, e.g. insertion into the cavities of decayed teeth, the finished product is drawn into very fine wires. In a second example, the metal or alloy is heated to a high temperature, 1000‹ C. or more, and the radioactive substances are added thereto together with organic bodies, such as glycerine, sugar, citric acid &c., to act as reducing agents when radioactive salts are employed. The alloys so formed can be treated as in the previous example. In a third example, the radio-active substances are mixed with the constituents of an enamel with which the previously-prepared foil, wires, &c. arecoated and then fixed. Reference is made in the Specification to the use for medical purposes of radio-active bodies enclosed in small soldered metal tubes or in sealed glass tubes contained in a protective metal casing, and also to radio-active preparations secured to thin metal sheets or to a fabric base by means of varnish.
