Brakes and retarding - apparatus for paying-out apparatus. -In a fire escape the lowering chain 11 passes over a chain wheel 8 mounted on a threaded part 9<1> of a shaft 9 between escapement wheels 2 which are free on the shaft and disposed adjacent to friction discs 12 fast on the shaft. When the chain is pulled, the wheel 8 moves along the shaft and clamps one of the escapement wheels between it and a disc 12, thereby putting the escapement mechanism into operation.
