Thermal switches; switches, quick-action.-A device for regulating the temperature of electric irons &c. comprises a contact 37 co-operating with a fixed contact 52 and carried by a wheel 30 oscillated by two bimetallic strips 22, 22<1> or other thermal devices, such as fluid operated pistons. When the iron becomes hot, the strip 22 bends down, lowers a rod 21 and rotates a member 20 about an axis 19<2> and an arm 20<1> on the member 20 engages a spring 34 connected to the wheel 30, the spring 34 becoming stressed and tending to rotate the wheel 30 in a clockwise direction. The strip 22<1> also bends down, lowers a rod 21<1> and rotates a spindle 25 thereby stressing a blade spring 28 arranged between the spindle and the wheel 30 and tending to rotate the wheel 30 in a clockwise direction. The wheel 30 is prevented from rotating under the action of the springs 34, 28 bv a pawl 46 engaging a tooth 42 until the pawl is moved away by the left hand end of the member 20 engaging a pin 48 on the pawl, whereupon the wheel 30 swings round and effects a quick break between the contacts 37, 52. The moment of release is regulated by raising or lowering the pivot 19<2> by rotating an arm 11. The strips 22, 22<1> now cool and the spring 28 is stressed in a direction tending to move the wheel 30 in a counter-clockwise direction. The pawl 46 bearing on the inclines 45, 44 on the wheel 30 serves at first to retard the action and finally to give a quick make. The strength of the spring acting on the pawl 46 may be adjusted by moving a lever 50. Contacts.-The contact 37 is electrically connected to the terminal 40 by means of a crank 39 and connecting bar 38. Indicators.-The position of the switch is indicated by a pointer connected to the wheel 30 and also by a lamp in parallel with the heating circuit which lights up when the switch is closed.
