Stroboscopic apparatus. - In order to reduce the observation period in stroboscopic apparatus without at the same time reducing the time of the eclipse period, the speed factor determining the frequency of observation is different from that determining the length of time of each observation. A pair of shutters, arranged across the line of vision, is used, both moving simultaneously and preferably in the same direction, the speed of one being greater than the speed of the other. In one form a pair of concentric sleeve like shutters a, b are utilized having apertures a<1>, b<1>, so arranged that they coincide on the line of vision at intervals during rotation. The inner shutter is rotated at a lower speed than the outer shutter, and determines the frequency of observation, the outer shutter determining the length of time of the observation. The inner shutter is geared to the outer shutter by gearing c the ratio of which may be changed, or the two shutters may be driven independently- In another form the shutters consist of apertured discs.
