Emulsions, making.-In the production of dispersions of solids in liquids, such as pigments in oily or aqueous media, discs having a relative rotary motion one of which is wholly or partly faced with a yielding or flexible material, have superimposed thereon a reciprocatory motion so as to produce the smearing or wiping action described in Specification 276,400. The discs are normally flat, but curved or spherical discs may be employed, the reciprocatory motion being transformed from a straight line to a line along the arc of curvature of the grinding members. In the form shown, the lower disc 5 is rotated and the upper disc 10 is given a reciprocatory movement. Rotation is imparted to the disc 5, through bevel gearing 7, 8, from a shaft 3, and the disc 10 is reciprocated by a cam 27 on the shaft 3 through a frame 13 on which the disc is carried, a roller 26 on an arm 25 of the frame engaging the cam groove. The upper disc 10 is carried by a shaft 14 connected to radial arms 12 in a central well 11, the shaft being supported by the engagement of a collar 19 thereon with the head 29 of a screwed sleeve 30 capable of sliding, but not rotating, in the frame 13. Adjustment of the distance between the plates is effected by a crankoperated worm 17 and a worm-wheel 15 mounted in the frame 13 and screwed to engage the sleeve 30. Material is supplied to the discs through the central well 11 by a pivoted spout 28 connected by a flexible pipe 33 to a supply hopper. To facilitate the entry of coarse material to the discs, a bevel 11<a> is formed round the central well, the bevel being increased in size, if necessary, until the disc 10 assumes an arch shape. For cleaning purposes, the disc 10 may be raised by a forked lever 22 engaging the collar 19, and the spout 28 by a lever 31. The treated material from the discs is guided by a surrounding wall 34 to a delivery shoot. The flexible material, e.g. plush or leather, may be inserted in a groove 48, Fig. 9, or may take the form of a depending apron 51, Fig. 8. In, a modification, the upper disc is fixed and a combined rotary and reciprocatory motion is imparted to the lower one. A number of upper discs may be used, each with its own central feed, or one large disc may be provided with several feeding apertures. The temperature at which the operation is carried out may be varied by heating or cooling the materials or the stationary disc or both discs.
