Abstract
276,538. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Janin, A.). Feb. 27, 1926. Macadamized roads.-A broken stone, gravel, slag or macadamized road comprises a surface layer b of irregular shaped aggregate, the surface voids of which are filled with a bituminous top dressing c formed of aggregate of sand size the fragments of' which are coated with a thin cementitious film of bitumen having a consistency between 30 and 125 points of penetration as tested by the Dow machine, the film leaving the fragments discrete so that they fall apart into the surface voids without adding a separate layer to destroy the non-skid texture of the stone. The preferred top-dressing is that described in Specification 275,280. The aggregate of the surface layer, which can be handled at atmospheric temperature, is preferably coated first with a light, partly volatile, liquefier such as paraffin, naphtha or petrol which acts as a flux to a second coating of heavy bitumen. Fine material matter such as lime may be included as a filler. The surface layer may be placed on one or more layers a of partly or fully compacted bituminized aggregate, each layer being of finer gauge than the one beneath and interlocking therewith. The partly compacted layers may be fully compacted together in one operation.
