Floors, cleaning. - A machine for scrubbing, smoothing and waxing floors is provided with a rotatable shaft 5 carrying brushes 7 (or polishing pads) and with a hood 22 surrounding the brushes, the hood being movably mounted so that it may be lowered to bear against the floor or raised and held in such raised position. The hood is provided with two posts 24 which pass through apertures in a frame 1 and are provided with lateral projections 25. A shaft 27, to which are attached weighted arms 29, is provided with arms 30, 31 for engagement respectively with the tops of the posts 24 and the projections 25 as the arms 29 are thrown over to one or other side of the shaft 27, the weights 28 acting to press the hood against the floor or to raise it to bear at the top against the frame 1. The shaft 5, provided with a spider 6 to which scrubbing brushes 7 or polishing appliances may be secured, is rotated by means of a belt 16 and pulleys 17, 18, 19, 21 from a main shaft 15 which is driven by a motor (not shown). A container 32 for washing water is provided with an adjustable tap 33 to control the flow of liquid to a channel 39 in the hood, and thence by apertures 40 to the front of the brushes. The used liquid which collects in the hood is sucked up a pipe 42 by a reciprocating pump 43 and discharged through an outlet 55 into a tank 61 by way of a pipe 60, or back to the channel 39 by way of a pipe 62, the direction of flow depending upon the position of a manually-operated valve 56 in the pipe 62. For drying the floor after scrubbing operations a drum 64 is provided which is covered by detachable drying cloths 70, and is driven, through gearing, from the main shaft 15. The drum may be perforated, and may have in the interior a fan combined with an electric heater, to blow heated air through the drying cloths. Alternatively, the fan may be placed behind the drum to blow air directly against the floor. A receptacle 78 for wax is rotatably mounted on the frame 1 in front of the hood 22, and is formed with holes 79 adapted to be opened and closed by means of a slide valve 80. When the floor is to be polished, the scrubbing brushes 7 are replaced by polishing brushes or pads, the hood 22 is raised and wax is allowed to fall from the receptacle 78. The machine may be driven from the motor by means including friction wheels engaging the rear wheels 4, or the motor may be dispensed with, the movable parts of the machine being driven by means of the rear wheels as the machine is pulled by hand.
