Abstract

273,481. Nanji, D. R. June 23, 1926. Starch. - Solid starch after purification and drying, is mixed with a quantity of alkaline agent such as alkali carbonate, hydroxide bicarbonate or borate, not greater than 0.3 per cent by weight of the starch, so that the product is substantially neutral in reaction. In a preferred procedure, the amylaceous material is washed and, if necessary, digested with acid, and made into a cream with a 1 per cent solution of hydrochloric acid. The mixture is oxidized with a potassium permanganate or dichromate solution, and the excess of oxidizing agent removed by sulphurous acid or bisulphites. After washing, drying and sieving, the small amount of alkaline agent is added as above stated. The starch so produced gives limpid, neutral solutions in water, whose viscosity varies inversely as the quantity of alkaline agent used. It may be used in the sizing and finishing of textiles and paper. The Provisional Specification describes the addition of a suitable and very small amount of alkaline agent which is exemplified at 0.1-1 per cent by weight of the starch.
