Abstract

273,404. Graveley, H. V. N. April 1, 1926. Manhole covers. - Manhole and like covers e which are secured to their seat, by a cross-bar m, the ends of which are caused to engage recesses u on the outer frame by the rotation of a central screw i on the cover, are positively unseated and released when unlocking rotation is imparted to the screw. In the form shown, the screw i, which engages the cover by a spherical joint l, has a spring o mounted between the cross-bar and an outer nut and washer r. Unlocking rotation of the screw acts by friction to turn the bar m into the open portion of the slot u, Fig. 3, and further rotation of the screw causes a collar w thereon to engage beneath the cover to unseat it. The joint between the cover and the frame is effected by deep and shallow grooves c, f on the frame, which contain non-set filling material and are engaged by corresponding projecting rims on the cover.
