Abstract

272,696. Roberts, C., and Elliot, W., M. July 8, 1926. Driving-gear. - In segmental pinion and rack gearing, applicable to steam engine driving gears, the segmental pinions are of special form having ordinary teeth over an arc of 90 degrees, 3-3A. Fig. 3, and, at each end thereof, teeth 7, 8 formed on a pitch curve of parabolic form determined by striking an axis 5-5a, at a distance from the point 3 or 3A equal to the radius of the pitch circle. The co-operating racks 9, 10 have straight portions of normal form terminating at each end in teeth 11 forming counterparts for the teeth 7, 8, the starting tooth 11A of each rack being spring mounted. The invention is shown applied to a compound steam engine with expansion valves arranged in conjunction with the ordinary valve gear to maintain adequate cushioning.
