Roller-and-breast mills; impact pulverizers; feeding-devices for granular and like materials.-In apparatus for crushing and feeding pitch to mixers, the large lumps of pitch are crushed in a mill having a single cylinder and then transferred to a Carr grinder which comprises a casing surrounding the lower parts of rotating plates provided with scrapers which cause the crushed pitch thrown out by centrifugal force to fall on to the casing. The pieces of pitch are fed by a hopper 1, Fig. 5, to the crusher 2, whence they are delivered by a distributor 3 to a Carr grinder 4, the rotating plates of which are provided with scrapers and surrounded at the lower part by a casing 9. The crushed particles are received by a pipe 11 to the feed-shoot of the grinder 4 and delivers it into a cylindrical hopper 7 which feeds a distributing-device 8. A steel member 13 carried by a slowly-rotating vertical shaft 14 scrapes the walls of the hopper 7 and directs the pitch to opening 12. A plate 17, Fig. 1, with openings 22 is rotated on a vertical shaft 16 carried by a base 15 by means of bevel gearing 18, 19 from a driving-shaft 20, and pistons 27 are arranged to move vertically in the openings 22. The pistons 27 are carried by shafts 28 which are mounted in members 26 bolted to the plate 17 and carry at their lower ends rollers 29 running on a path 30. Part of the roller path consists of a vertically-displaceable member 30<1> mounted on screwed rods 32 engaging members 33 that can be turned by gearing 34, 35 operated by means of a handle 31, Fig. 4. A pointer 36 working over a graduated scale 37 indicates the position of the movable element 30<1> of the roller path 30. When a roller 29 of a piston is located on the element 30, the corresponding opening 22 is situated beneath the filling- opening 38 of the mixing-device and filling takes place. As the plate 27 rotates, the roller passes from the element 30<1> on to an upwardly-inclined part of the path 30 and the piston is moved upwards. The roller then travels over an horizontal part of the path 30 and down an incline to the member 30<1>. A scraper 40 causes the material which has been pushed up through an opening 22 by the piston to fall into a shoot 41 leading to the mixing-apparatus. Leather bellows 49 held at one end against the collars 23 of the pistons and at the other end against the members 26 prevent dust from entering the bearings of the shafts 28. A flange 51 on the member 26 runs in a trough 52 carried by the base 15, the trough being filled with oil or coal dust to form a tight joint.
