Testing physical qualities of materials; testing lubricating efficiency of liquids. - In the machine of the parent invention, the bodies to be tested and their supports are arranged and constructed to admit of testing material under rolling or rolling and sliding friction and to test flexible material and the lubricating properties of lubricants at different temperatures. The test body N which is suported by the lever L<1>, L<2> and loaded by a weight S is cylindrical and mounted to rotate about its axis in the bearing member M. The disc F grinds a groove in the body N the depth of the groove and the friction being determined as in the parent invention. The bearing M is adjustable about a vertical axis so that the axes of the bodies N and F may be arranged at an angle. The bodies may be formed as truncated cones contacting on a line at an angle to the axes. For testing flexible material, the band X is passed around a disc F<1> the band resting tangentially against and being secured to a wheel Y fixed to the pivot of the lever L<2>. The measurement of wear and friction may be performed in the same manner as in the parent Specification. For measuring the wear of the band X a roller P is provided. Elongation due to wear is measured by movement of the lever L<1>, L<2>. Textile fabrics, leather, rubber &c. may be tested. When testing particularly bands heated with lubricants, the disc runs in a fixed container h for oil, water, soap, &c. The closure C has a hole f for a gas burner g which heats the annular space a. Either a test body may be pressed against the disc by the lever L<2> or a band may be used, suitable openings being formed in the casing to allow of their employment.
