Feeding-devices.-In a machine for treating rubber &c. comprising a rotor working within a mixing chamber, the chamber is provided with a closure in the form of a plunger which forces the charge into the chamber and is operated by power, automatic means being provided for cutting off the power when the closure is in either its upper or lower limiting positions. In the form shown the closure works in a charging stack and is raised and lowered by worm-gear operated from an electric motor, the circuit of which is broken when the closure reaches its upper or lower positions. The closure may be kept at a desired temperature by circulating fluid led thereto through pipes with telescopic joints. The closure or plunger 23, Fig. 4, slides in a stack 22 which can be charged by a side hopper 25 closed by a pivoted cover 27. The plunger is operated through a pin 36, the spherical head of which rides between members 34. The pin is connected with a crosshead 37 riding in a casing 38 and operated through a worm and screw thread from an electric motor. As shown in Fig. 10, the crosshead is guided by means of pairs of blocks 48, 49 riding in vertical guides 41 in the casing 38 and mounted on a cross-pin 50. The motor drives the worm 72 through reduction gearing and its circuit is controlled by a pin on the plunger riding in a groove 86 in the stack and engaging fingers 104 at the ton and bottom of its stroke to open the motor circuit. For maintaining the temperature during mixing the bottom of the plunger is provided with passages 112, 113, Fig. 9, for the circulation of fluid, which passages are connected to tubular members 114, 115, in which telescopic tubes 120, 121 connected with a fixed fluid supply. The side faces of the plunger are slightly opened from the stack, the plunger being provided with scraper plates 126 127 round the edges of the base, and with guides engaging the corners at its upper end.
