Abstract
270,153. Marks, E. C. R., (Christensen Air Brake Co.). Sept. 30, 1926. Compressing air for uses other than propulsion.-The removable front cover plate of an automobile engine is shaped to provide a compressor crank casing and to support the compressor cylinder, and is removable wholly or in part to adjust and inspect the adjustable big end bearing of the connecting- rod by which the piston is driven from the engine shaft. The engine and compressor may have the same lubricating oil circuit. Fig. 3 shows a cooling space 29 to which the oil is forced and from which it passes through a passage 30 to the crank case. Fig. 2 shows the front plate 8 forming the compressor crank case and having a mounting pad 10 which supports the cylinder.. The big end of the connecting-rod is formed in two halves 19', Fig. 3, bolted together over an eccentric 20 keyed to the crank-shaft which carries a shaft balancer 21 and a counterbalance weight 22. The pad portion 10 is bored to communicate with the crank case, and formed with a rear slot merging with an opening in the front plate portion 25, which opening is covered by a plate 27 when the compressor is assembled.. Fig. 5 shows the compressor casing formed in two parts 31, 32 bolted together and forming at the top a two part pad 41 for the cylinder. The part 31 is bolted to the front end of the engine crank case 7. The compressor shaft is screwed to the engine shaft and bolted to a timing gear 37. The front section 32 of the casing carries the starting claw shaft 51. In a modification, the front cover plate is formed of an upper and a lower section co-operating to form the compressor crank case, a cylinder support and a. trunnion bearing portion.
