Abstract
270,132. Trade, Secretary of the Board of, and Boys, C. V. July 22,1926. Calorimeters. - Mechanism for delivering weighed quantities of liquid at predetermined intervals of time, for use particularly in connection with gas calorimeters such as that described in Specification 180,080, comprises a counterweighted balance beam supported in a condition of unstable equilibrium and pivotally carrying a tipping bucket on one of its arms, and a liquid feed jet adapted to feed liquid to the bucket in a direction substantially parallel to the tipping axis of the bucket. The tipping bucket 3 is pivoted upon a balance beam 1 resting on knifeedged bearings 2 disposed below the centre of gravity of the beam system. Stops 4 limit the movements of the beam. Counterweights 5, 7 provided with lock-nuts 6, 8 are carried on a screw-threaded portion of the beam, and the counterweight 5 may be graduated so that each unit of the graduations corresponds to one gramme in ten tilts of the bucket thus facilitating a change of setting. The bucket is provided with a counterweight 18 and a lock-nut 19, and the trunnions of the bucket are situated so that the centre of gravity of the charged bucket is above the trunnions. The bucket is charged through a tubular receiving spout 13 by means of an horizontal jet which strikes the spout at the spot 14. When the requisite weight has entered the bucket, the beam, owing to its unstable equilibrium moves rapidly to its upper stop 4 and the spout 13 is quickly removed from the path of the water jet. When the beam reaches its upper stop the bucket tips and discharges its contents. In the discharging position a pawl 11 engages the pouring lip of the bucket and retains it until liberated by a push rod 12 controlled by a clock movement. A pair of metal strips 24 on the pawl 11 serve to drain the bucket by capillary action. On the return movement of the bucket an arm 10 thereon strikes a swivel piece 16 carrying a feather 15 which is thus caused to make a rapid movement through the air and cushion the return. An arm 9 limits the tipping movement in the discharge position.
