Abstract

Screw fans; mounting.-A fan or propeller 18 and the pulley 20 by which it is driven are supported by end plates 13, 14 and ball races 11, 12 at the end of a sleeve 10 mounted to rotate on a spindle 7 with opposed cones carrying ball races in the manner commonly used in the pedals or wheel hubs of bicycles or the like. The sleeve and ball races are welded, brazed or soldered to ensure the fan and pulley rotating together. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the fan 18 is formed from sheet metal and the pulley 20 is of wood. The spindle 7 can be mounted by its screwed end in any suitable support. A modified form of pulley, shown in Fig. 4, consists of two dished metal plates 23, 24 secured together to present flanged conical outer surfaces 25, 26 for the reception of the driving belt. In another modification a plate with a flanged belt engaging surface 31, Fig. 5 is secured to a flat disc 33, while in the form shown in Fig. 6 a V-shaped rim 37, 39 is formed by the two discs 34, 35 the dished part of the former 34 fitting inside that of the latter 35.
