Abstract

Driving, suspending, and balancing. - The bowl of a centrifugal separator contains liner discs and is connected to the upper end of the main shaft so that it can oscillate to a limited extent while the shock is absorbed by the intermediate and footstep bearings. The upper end 6 of the shaft 7 is partly spherical and supports the bowl through the central socket 2 and the bearing block 5. A ring 9 is secured to the socket 2 to limit the oscillation of the drum, and a driving cotter pin 10 is passed through the shaft within the socket. The intermediate bearing consists of a floating bush 11 held by spring pressed plungers 16 arranged in the housing 12. The spherical surface 18 at the lower end of the shaft 7 rests in a correspondingly recessed bearing block 19, spring-supported in a housing 20 connected to the shaft by some form of universal coupling 22. The block 19 thus receives the axial thrust of the shaft 7 but allows it to move at small angles in relation to the block. A worm shaft 24 enters the shank 23 of the housing 20 and is supported in roller bearings 25, 26. This shaft is operated from a motor 30 through a centrifugal clutch 35 and toothed and worm gearing. The same mechanism drives the lubricating-oil pump 36 and a pump 38 which can be used to supply the mixture to the bowl or to empty vessels adapted to collect the separated liquids. A brake 37 operated by hand or hydraulically or electromagnetically may be provided.
